CASA's Year in Review - 2009

June 2009 events included the 11th Annual CASA Golf Tournament, which raised $52K.  Time Warner Cable again hosted the tournament.

The annual CASA Volunteer Recognition Luncheon was held at the AAUW (American Association of University Women) building.  Linda Delaney was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year.  In addition to being a Case Volunteer, she is Co-Chair of the Annual Golf Tournament.  Linda expressed her feelings about being a volunteer: "My experiences as a CASA have sometimes been trying, but there are enough good moments to outweigh the bad.  Being able to help children in need is very fulfilling."

The Lifebook Project

This CASA special project is supporter by the generous donation of the Fram family in honor of Elinore Fram.  Elinore was a CASA volunteer for 20 years.  In 1998, she was awarded the National CASA of the year award because of her dedication to improving the lives of children who had been abused and neglected.  Elinore was a wife, mother, and special education teacher.  She loved to engage the children she advocated for in hands on activities that helped them express their feelings.

The Lifebook project is a collaboration with the Department of Human Services and the Law Guardian’s office to promote “Lifebooks” for children involved in the court system.

In addition, we are encouraging parents involved in Family Treatment Court to do a “Family Lifebook.”  Family lifebooks tell the story of the family and include a special chapter for each child.  Family Lifebooks help the family see their history in pictures, stories, and other items.

Working on Family/Lifebooks can bring laughs, smiles, tears, and lots of talk.  Each book will be tailored to the child and/or family.  For parents and children, these books can help family members develop a strong sense of themselves and of the family.  The books can help in making life choices and taking responsibility for ones actions.

CASA has hired Barb Benedict as the Lifebook Project Coordinator.  Barb was the Director of the Onondaga CASA program where she was the Director for ten years.  When Barb’s family relocated to Rochester, we were delighted that she chose to work with our CASA program.

Many people support CASA in various ways.  The CASA staff would like to thank all those who either directly or indirectly supported our advocacy for abused and neglected children throughout the year.

We would first like to thank our dedicated volunteers who contribute their time and energy to advocate for the best interest of the children in our community.  Without our volunteers, we would not be able to serve as many children as we do.

The Brockport School of Dance and Performing Arts gave a performance on 1/31/10 to benefit CASA.  CASA appreciates being chosen to be the beneficiary of the proceeds from this event

We would like to thank the Parmelee Family who, in loving memory of  Dr. Harold Parmelee, requested that family and friends send donations in his memory to our program.  Dr.  Harold Parmelee was the husband of Geradeen Parmelee a long time volunteer and friend of CASA.

We would like to thank the Fram Family who, in loving memory of Elinore Fram (CASA Volunteer for 20 years), have established the Lifebook Project.  In addition to their generous donation, they also asked family and friends to donate to CASA in lieu of flowers.
